Are Quartz Worktops Resistant to Heat, Scratch, Stains & UV?
Although this article is primarily aimed at providing insight into Quartz Worktop Resistances, comparisons will be made to natural stone working surfaces.

There are many surfaces that could qualify as great options for worktops, but, whether quartz is the best kitchen worktop for your purposes depends on how you use it! What is suitable for one may not be suitable for another, perhaps quartz worktop installations are suitable for heat and scratch resistances or less likely to stain due to troublesome cooking ingredients like turmeric? There are pros and cons with all materials and after some research you must settle with the kitchen worktop surface that resonates with you.
Engineered Quartz Worktop Strengths
An essential aspect in deciding on which worktop is ideal for your purposes, should consider the resistances that each has to offer, according to the design and use.
How engineered quartz is made to have all round resistances that results in extremely strong, hard and durable, resistant surfaces that should, if maintained with care, last for years.
Mineral Hardness
The main content in quartz worktops is crystalline mineral 'Quartz' that provides a level of hardness to most natural stone surface types. The other minerals found in natural stone have a either a positive or negative hardness value that effect the resulting hardness of each stone type. Crystalline quartz has a mineral hardness of 7 - 7.5 on the Mohs hardness scale (Diamond is 10) and accounts for approximately 85% to 93% of quartz worktop content. The approximate 7% to 15% polymer resin binders, pigments and pattern fillers reduce the hardness of the mix. So, with resulting hardness of approximate 7, quartz worktops are relatively tough and as hard as some granites.
Resin and Pattern Fillers
Quartz worktops would be plain without colour and patterns, in fact, it is exactly how quartz surfaces started when it was developed in 1963 by the Breton Company. Whether or not the resin binder used was intended to provide additional benefits to man-made stone does not matter, the fact is - it does. The resin binder aids with porosity and little discussed 'flexible strength', which, I find makes quartz so resilient compared to other man-made worksurfaces and natural stone.
Material Flexibility
The synthetic resins (polymers) used in quartz worktops, although the types used differ according to each manufacture, provide an element of flexibility. This flexible strength allows for quartz worktops to be cut in ways that other stone types cannot. Natural stone is tough but brittle. When excess pressure is exerted, especially on narrowed sections after cutting sinks and hobs, natural stone can crack or break unless support bars are added at an additional cost.
Quartz Worktop Stain Resistance
Most kitchen stains are not permanent and can be just stubborn surface marks that require a little extra effort to remove.
The key question: "Are Quartz Worktops Stain Resistant?">
Answer "YES"
The highly polished finish on the very dense quartz surface in combination with the resin binder makes for a difficult to penetrate barrier. Only under certain mis-use will permanent staining occur. Quartz surfaces are relatively stain resistant, especially if appropriate avoidance of acidic and alkaline substances is maintained. Chemicals, certain foods, and improper use are the largest causes of worktop staining.
Porosity
Only when a staining agent is able to penetrate the highly polished will staining occur, the agent would need to be in solution (liquid carrier) and strong enough to affect the binder, dyes and pattern fillers. Apart from a handful of food stuffs, the only culprits that remain are man-made chemicals. In natural stone surfaces, periodical sealing is required to aid surface resistance. Despite natural stone being highly polished like quartz, it is less dense and the surfaces are scattered with small holes which can allow the ingress of liquids, unless sealed.
Chemicals and Bacteria
Avoid using strong cleaning chemicals or ALL man-made chemicals in everyday use, especially on bacterial resistant worktops! Using abrasives or harsh chemicals, most likely, will create larger irreversible issues. We live in a time where theories threaten common sense approaches to health, where synthetic cleaning chemicals remove all living microbes, patiently await to toxify foods during preparation. We must re-educate ourselves that living microbes are essential to life; that our bodies naturally discard unwanted toxins. Tuck away chemicals for better health and worktop surfaces will be safeguarded against microbe-killing, toxic chemicals. As quartz worktop materials are so highly polished, sealed by the polymer resins and with a high density of quartz, they are already bacterial resistant, and all that is required to clean them is warm soapy water. An easy-to-clean, bacterial resistant surface made from quartz is amongst many reasons why quartz maybe a good worktop choice.
Food Stuffs
There are a number of foods that can leave a stubborn stain, all can be removed easily if acted on quickly, leave for a few days and then you have to roll your sleeves up! Using warm water and a mild detergent will work 90% of the time, if you feel its not happening, then resort to using lemon, vinegar or bicarbontae soda. Never use more than the scourer side of a sponge as an abrasive. Coffee, if left to dry and not cleaned for a few days can leave a faint surface stain visible on white surfaces, however, this is not permanent and easily removed with warm soapy water and a little extra force. Turmeric leaves a yellow stain, much like coffee, it can be removed with a little more effort using bicarbonate soda... persistence is key.
Ultimately, to keep your quartz worktop protected make use of chopping boards, coasters and placemats habitual... and for known staining culprits - be more wary.
Quartz Worktop Heat Resistance
Burn marks on any kitchen worktop regardless of surface material, call it an accident or mis-hap - lets be honest, its caused by either not paying attention or through distraction.
The key question: "Are Quartz Worktops Heat Resistant?"
Answer: "YES"
But what does heat resistance mean? Heat resistance of up to 150 degrees because thats the approximate heat resistance of the resin binder. Stone working surfaces are not designed to accept hot pans directly off the hob or trays out of the oven, thats what trivets are designed for. The resin binder, dyes and fillers account for approx 7-15% and is spread consistently throughout the entire quartz slab. That being said, there is a good chance that placing a very hot item on the quartz worktop for a few moments, whilst arranging the oven would be ok, but is that a risk you want to take? Heat resistance expectations for any worktop should be of boiling water, and recepticles holding such... that does not include pots and pans that have had direct contact with a heat source. Many would argue that natural stone is totally heat resistant, on the contrary, because natural stone is tough it is brittle, with varying veins of mineral content, cracking or separation is a risk through thermal shock (hot against cold). Stone temperatures will rest at an average temperature of the room or place that is situated, it seems cold to touch due to the heat from your hands being dissipated through the stone almost instantly. It must be remembered that heat causes expansion and cold cause contraction. If both events try to happen at the same time and place, fissures, veins and even small air gaps in the stone will open up and cause either a widening or cracking of the worktop.
Trivets, Mats and Placemats
Without using the correct implements that are designed to reduce heat flow could result in irreversable heat damage to your worktop. The resin content will dis-colour to a yellow through to a dark rich brown depending on contact time and amount of heat. Traditional heat resistance protection is strongly advised. Trivets will provide additional heat resistance by reducing the transfer of heat through dissipation - elevated off the surface. Keeping it easily accessible near hobs and microwaves, it will be an essential asset on your worktop. Alternatively, redirecting heat away from a surface with heat resistant silicone mats. Silicone mats are slip-resistant, easy to clean, roll, and store away; as long as you keep it near your oven or microwave for ease of use.
Trivets are the best choice worktop protector against heat damage, they come in all shapes and designs and if chosen correctly, it can compliment kitchen decor.
Quartz Worktop Scratch Resistance
Crystalline quartz is a very hard mineral and a whopping 90% (approx) of it constitutes quartz surfaces, making for an extremely hard and dense worktop.
The key question: "Are Quartz Worktops Scratch Resistant?"
Answer: "YES"
The hardness of a material directly relates to it scratch resistance. As quartz is approx 7 on the mohs hardness scale, thats very hard! Scratch marks only become apparent when scraping objects that are harder or equal to the hardness of the surface. Similarly, scratch marks may become apparent when scraping objects that are less hard or dense, using force. For comparison, steel has a hardness value of 6.5, a dinner plate around 5.5 and a fingernail is around 2.5. Despite there being only 7-15% polymer resins blended evenly throughout mixture during manufacture, this is the most likely scratch-able aspect.
Chopping Boards
It is best not to get complacent when your have a tough worktop made out of stone, everything can be scratched. Repetitive cutting on a quartz worktop making tiny scratches can build up to areas where the polished surface has been worn away. Chopping boards are designed for chopping and preparing foods, not only preventing scratches but saving from possible food staining. Chopping boards can be made from the same quartz material when cutting your worktops making them a complimentary feature.
All materials can be scratched without care, the best form of protection preventing scratches is to use chopping boards when preparing food.
Quartz Worktop & Ultraviolet (UV) Rays
Internally, quartz worktops exhibit perfect resistance from ultraviolet rays (UV Rays). Externally, however, ultraviolet Class B (UVB) will dis-colour the polymer resin binder over time. Lighter colours are susceptible to yellowing; darker colours are likely to fade.

Ultraviolet Ray Types
The three types of UV rays emitted from the sun are classified according to wavelength; UltraViolet A , B and, C. UVC rays are blocked by the Earth's atmosphere. UVB rays are filtered out by ordinary glass windows (Emitted UVB rays, especially between April - September in the UK, provide essential Vitamin D). Over 50% of unreflected UVA rays enter through ordinary glass windows, recognised as heat, with negligible effect on resin content in quartz surfaces, and good reason why quartz surface companies provide lengthy warranties.
Whites may yellow and blacks may fade in the sunshine, windows are the best quartz worktop protection, so keep your quartz for internal use only.
