Most quartz worktop problems are connected. The same simple habits that prevent staining will often prevent limescale, ring marks, heat damage and surface wear.

Worktop Issues are often Connected

Presuming correct manufacture and installation of your installed quartz worktops, very little should go wrong with your worktop. But, the unexpected should be expected, at least occasionally! Hopefully a few simple avoidance techniques will rectify the few issues that may arise to help you protect your worktop. As with anything, staying calm and reacting as promptly as possible can resolve most issues fairly easily. The engineered quartz composition is designed to be resistant.

Although this guide is written with a quartz worktop surface material in mind, the practices should can be applied to almost any engineered or natural stone working surface types. Natural stone differs to quartz worktops in that they require regular sealing to maintain a porosity resistance.

Why Quartz Worktops are Non-Porous

Quartz worktop surfaces are highly resistant because the quartz particles are densely packed and bound together with resin during manufacture. Combined with a polished surface, this creates a material that is effectively non-porous and highly resistant to water ingress and bacterial growth.

How Chemicals Eat Your Worktops

Many cleaning chemicals work by breaking down oils, minerals or organic deposits. While quartz is highly resistant, prolonged exposure to harsh chemicals or strong acidic cleaners can affect the resin binder and leave visible marks. Acidic substances work in pretty much the same way, however, the electrical charge of a molecule is broken down.

Quartz Slab Manufacture & Heat

A small percentage of polymer resin is used to bind quartz particles together during manufacture. This binder if exposed to high heat will over time discolour leaving a yellow to dark brown mark. Placing hot pans can cause the yellowing through heat intensity at point of contact with the worktops and form rings.

What Counts as a Quartz Worktop Stain?

The word stain is often used to describe any mark that remains visible after a spill, but there is an important distinction when it comes to quartz worktops.

Quartz is a highly non-porous material, so everyday liquids do not normally penetrate into the worktop in the same way they can with porous natural stone.

Common Stubburn Stains

A coffee, tea, wine, cooking-oil and even turmeric marks are common stubburn stains that remains after the initial wipe and are not necessarily permanent stains. In many cases, the substance has simply dried onto the surface or left a residue that requires more thorough cleaning.

Surface Mark or Residue

Food, drinks, oils and other everyday substances can dry onto the surface and leave a visible mark. These are generally removable with appropriate cleaning.

Mineral Deposits

Hard water can leave calcium and other mineral deposits behind as it evaporates. Around sinks, taps and drainer grooves these deposits can build up and appear as white patches, streaks or dull areas. This is a deposit on the surface rather than the quartz itself being stained.

Persistent Staining

A mark that remains after appropriate cleaning may be described as a persistent stain. However, persistence does not automatically mean that the quartz has been permanently damaged. Some substances simply require a suitable cleaner and more time to remove safely.

Permanent Chemical Damage

This is different from an ordinary stain. Strong chemicals, solvents, highly alkaline or acidic products and some aggressive cleaning agents can affect the resin binder or surface finish of engineered quartz. Once the material itself has been chemically altered, the resulting discolouration may be permanent.

A Stain Is Not Necessarily Permanent

It is therefore important not to assume that a visible mark means the quartz has permanently stained. Most everyday staining problems are better described as marks, residues or deposits that have become difficult to remove. The key difference is whether the substance is on the surface or whether the material has actually been altered by heat, chemicals or other damage.

Avoid aggressive scrubbing or increasingly strong chemicals simply because a mark has not disappeared immediately. Attempting to remove a harmless surface mark with an unsuitable chemical can turn a removable mark into permanent surface damage. Prompt cleaning, appropriate products and a little patience will resolve the vast majority of everyday marks on a quartz worktop.

Unlike quartz, natural stone surfaces are not watertight unless the surfaces are sealed. Tiny holes spread across the surface (minimised by highly polished surfaces) will allow the ingress of water

Protection against Heat

Heat is one of the few causes of permanent quartz damage because it affects the resin binder within the material rather than simply marking the surface.

Ring marks from hot pans affect the integrity of the worktop, the resin that is affected will be discoloured deeper than surface layers.

Heat Damage

Heat damage from pots and pans is the most commonly reported cause of heat damage, which can appear as discoloured rings of yellow to brown in all man-made quartz worktops. Quartz is a composite of natural stone particles (Primarily Quartz) with a resin binder. Resin is a polymer that is derived from organic compounds and discolours with extended exposure to heat.

Keep your working surface for your culinary skills! get used to saying "Not there - its still new!". Although the hardness of steel is equivalent to the hardness of a quartz, scraping staples and keys will damage your working surface.

Common Causes

Worktops can be chipped in numerous ways, the most common causes are:

  • Removing and storing of pots and pans to and from undercounter cupboards, chipping either the upper or underside of the worktop edge.
  • Chips within the counter are caused by dropping heavy items with corners or sharp points onto the surface.
  • Using steel wool for example on stubborn stains may create small hairline scratches which develops over time dulling the working surface.

Protect Against Light & Environmental Exposure

There are 3 main types of UV Radiation, these are classified as UVA, UVB and UVC. UVC rays do not reach us. UV Radiation is the primary reason that quartz is not recommended for external use.

UVA and UVB rays are the biggest concern with ageing, yellowing, or burning materials.

UV (Ultravoilet) Radiation

Quartz is somewhat protected by windows as UVB is blocked and 1 quarter of UVA is blocked by untreated glass. The highly polished surface also helps to reflect light away from the surface giving extra protection. The discolouration with UVB and UVC rays if quartz is used externally will yellow brighter colours and fade (bleach) darker colours.

Unless you are really excited and are willing to be digilent on all the factors above, you may want to reconsider a pure white or black worktop! Apart from the issues above, black and white will show every crumb, every spill and yes, dust can build up on a kitchen surface! It must be remembered that a flat black or white highly polished surface perpendicular to windows, can and will be like a mirror in the light. So if you are considering white, you may need to consider the light!
