Evolution of the Stone Fireplace
The fireplace and fireplace hearths are structures made of brick, stone or metal and designed to contain a fire.
Fireplaces have a number of elements which play a role in making a the fireplace operate with efficiency in burning, heating and ventilation. We can only presume that a number of ingenious methods were used to ventilate dwellings and prevent intoxication from fumes.
Fireplaces have several key elements:

Earliest evidence
Evidence of the earliest fire pits exist all over the world, built into the ground within caves, or in dwellings. Within dwellings the fire pit would be centred so that toxic fumes and smoke could escape through an opening in the roof. These fire pits are the earliest form of fireplaces and would have been used primarily for warmth, cooking, heating water, laundry and other tasks that required heat.
Social Gatherings
As fire pits were usually centered within a room, families and friends would gather around them for mealtimes and social gatherings in the evenings. Fire pits provided a relaxing ambience as well as heating the dwelling, fireplaces are still considered by many in much the same way since their advent. The gatherings may also have been a necessity for communication of village safety, and day to day living.
Fireplace Ventilation
Effective ventilation is essential in any fireplace design, ensuring safe operation and efficient removal of smoke and gases.
It is without question that smoke inhalation has detrimental effects on our health, the addition of toxins which vary according to the fuel used can be deadly without adequate ventilation. Put simply, if you can smell it, then you are inhaling it also. For gases, it is recommended that detectors are used to monitor levels as gases such as carbon monoxide which is odourless and tasteless.

within the home, primary improvements for venting of smoke and gasses would have been priority. Raised fireplace hearths with grates would have replaced fire pits not only as a more permanent structure but for allowing the fire to breath through special vents to control airflow. Louvres allowed some airflow control and aided the removal of toxic fumes, and to prevent inclement weather entering the dwelling. High ceilings and canopies helped to prevent low lying fumes and the spreading of smoke in a room whilst allowing the room to be heated more efficiently.

Chimney / Stack Effect
A chimney is a vertical masonry, clay or metal structure that isolates toxic exhaust gases and smoke produced from a fireplace. Chimneys make it possible for the fireplaces to have a draft as well as fireplaces in several rooms. The draft (controlled by a thermal differential in air pressure), draws air into the combustion taking gases up and through a flue inside the chimney stack through what is called the chimney effect. Chimney pots may improve the chimneys draft by increasing the overall height of the chimney. Many designs and tweaks over the years have made the chimney design what we see in our homes and factories today.

All rooms in a household are now heated from a central heating system through radiators hung on walls. The fire surround
The fire surround consists of side supports and a mantlepiece across the top of the fireplace. As these are fitted to the outside of the fireplace opening, its exposure to heat is minimal and variations see these made from wood as well as stone. Often, but not always as ornate and grandeur in design than carved wooden side supports, natural stones limestone, marble and granite offer luxury in appearances, colour and unrivalled durable finishes. Highly polished and carved marble surrounds are often seen in stately homes with intricately carved floral designs sometimes with statues inbedded into the side supports as if holding up the mantelpiece.
Mantelpieces
The mantelpiece sits above the fireplace opening and often acts as a decorative focal point within the room.
Traditionally used to display ornaments, clocks or artwork, mantelpieces can be made from stone or wood depending on the overall design. Stone mantelpieces provide a premium, long-lasting finish that complements natural hearths and surrounds.
In modern interiors, minimalist floating mantelpieces are increasingly popular, offering a clean and contemporary look.
