Popular Vanity Top Stone Materials
The ideal vanity and splashback materials for vanity bathrooms are marble, porcelain and quartz. Marble offers unique appearances that no other stone can match, a colour depth and veining that no man-made stone can achieve. Quartz provides a watertight barrier in all of its colour options. Porcelain can benefit as a splashback material due to the panels being much thinner. Being slimmer makes for an easier installation and also does not have too much of an impact on overall dimensions.
Vanity Tops from Off-Cuts
Our full range of colours can be used for Vanity Tops, however, we recommend you visit us and see what off-cuts are available to save on material cost. Using off-cuts from other projects or utilising an off-cut after cutting your kitchen worktops can save £££'s on material alone. The most common type of off-cut material used is quartz (an engineered stone), other popular materials include porcelain and Marble.
Natural Stone Care
All solid surface worktop materials can be used for vanity tops, however, natural stone requires periodic sealing. Where porcelain and quartz are maintenance free, higher end natural stone marble vanity tops require sealing twice yearly to maintain a porosity resistance.

Designs can vary substantially depending on how the sink is mounted, over-mounted, under-mounted or even made from the stone material itself.
Closet Vanity Worktops
Generally, closet vanity tops are worktops for small closet WC's, bathrooms or for ensuite bathrooms. Toilet sink worktops tend to be less elaborate than bathroom worktops, where dressing up for the day or evening requires a higher level of vanity. Although both are pretty much the same in regards to styles and designs, closet vanities are generally smaller and used primarily for handwashing and routine cleanliness.
Bathroom Worktop Sizes
As closet toilets are smaller, vanity surfaces either extend wall to wall or made to fit a set sized unit, whether the unit is a freestanding unit or wall hung. Bathroom worktops are a run of worktop with one or more sinks. A bathroom vanity top with a single bowl can be made to any size allowing space for placement of beauty care products and devices. Bathrooms worktops with a double vanity are longer to accommodate 2 sink bowls.
Drop Edges and Floating
Increasing the visual appearance of a vanity top edge, for example: a 20mm thickness material made to appear 50mm or 100mm is called a drop edge profile. For wall to wall vanities this will only affect the front edge. Freestanding units or wall hung units with a drop edge will need this on the front and one or more sides, creating a boxing effect. For wall hung vanities, this added depth hides any supports, creating a floating effect. Floating vanity units are becoming increasingly popular, not only because they are sleek, but they take up no floor space making the bathroom or closet appear larger.
Splashbacks
Classified as wall protection, splashbacks and cladding is an essential aspect in any bathroom or toilet, especially for walk-in shower designs. In respect of design, cladding a bathroom can be achieved in numerous ways utilising contrasting colours and stone surface designs. Splashbacks behind vanities can be as low or as high as required and make good backdrops against mirrors and shelves for ensuite bathroom vanity tops.
Modern Designs
Vanity tops with surface mounted sinks that rest on top of the vanity surface require only holes cut for waste and possibly taps. Vanity taps tend to be plumbed into the wall as a form of space saving or the tap hole is situated in the vanity sink. This the cheapest option out of all vanity top designs because the stone worktop requires less fabrication. Cutting to size, polishing edges and making a waste hole of approx 76mm is all that is required. These modern designs can be utililed for both bathroom vanity types and smaller closest / cabinet mounted vanity tops.
Traditional Vanity Designs
Traditional vanity top designs have undermounted vanity sinks. The sink cut out is shaped to follow the curves of the sink with an overhang of approximately 7mm around the sinks perimetre. Taps are either plumbed into the wall or situated behind the sink requiring one or two holes to be cut into the vanity worktops surface.
This traditional design is more expensive than modern designs due a more labour intensive fabrication. Despite this, it is still a very popular vanity style because the surfaces are easier to clean and maintain. Also, as the vanity surface is not shadowed by an overmounted sink, the vanity top colour and design can radiate unhibited.
Integrated Vanity Tops
Integrated vanity tops with sink bowl/s made from the same material as the vanity top have a moulded appearance, as these are made by a manufacturer, integrated sink designs are as purchased. Bespoke made integrated vanity sinks can be made from the same or different materials and are either surface mounted, part recessed or undermounted. With bespoke vanity tops, designs are limited to angles without curves, however, designs are modern and sleek.
Although less popular due to time consuming fabrication and resulting costs, integrated vanity designs are the utlimate bespoke bathroom worktops.
