Carrara
The well known white, grey veined 'Carrara marble' is classified into 7 major types, and a huge range of varieties. The 7 renowned and quarried luxury natural stone marble types are Carrara, Venato, Arabescato, Statuario, Bardiglio, Nuvolato, and Calacatta. Numerous quarries stretch approximately 35 miles in the marble mountains near the city of Carrara, in the Apuan Alps region of Northern Tuscany, Central Italy.
Calacatta
Although Calacatta is a type of Carrara, it is regarded as a different marble, and also gets misspelt due to the Italian town name 'Calcata'. It is often wrongly pronounced and mistakenly associated with the city of Calcutta in india! The variations in calacatta veins can differ substantially in many ways such as thickness, colouration and intensity of veins.
Man-Made Surface Imitations
All natural marble colours and vein variations are seen duplicated in man-made quartz surfaces, some of which use or take on variations of the names given to each. White carrara quartz, an engineered quartz surface, obtains its name from the most commonly known Bianco Carrara Marble.
