Ever pondered what it is you are leaning against or standing upon? I wonder how many think we invented solid surfaces. Much like we supposedly invented the wheel! Solid surfaces were here long before we showed up and will be here long afterwards.
We take for granted how often we require a solid surface, the very though seems so mundane and, in many ways boring. But without them we would be at a loss, and have no where to do 'things'. In nature, anything that is flat and hard enough to carry out the job at hand can be classed as a solid surface, failing that, we always resort to using the floor.
Everything We Do As A Species, Stems From Artistic Expression
Probably the most important aspect, and what drives everything we do as a species, stems from artistic expression. We all want to create, our very being here is an expression of creation. From paintings on cave walls to preparing food, are all forms of art, and all require a surface to free our hands. As an artist myself, I hear many say that they are not good at art, but when everything that we do involves creating something, its all a form of art. Everyone expresses themselves in different ways, whether its using colour, imagination or spell craft to bring something into existence. Its all artistic expression. Freeing our hands, using a solid surface to place utensils or even to lean against allows the mind to relax and channel that creative expression.
Different Surfaces For Different Purposes
With the many paths that "solid surfaces" can take us on - of course, we have taken the path of working surfaces.
As with all spell craft, every word has a deeper meaning, a forgotten art that has over the past decade started to rise again in popularity.
Etymology is to find the root meaning, history and development of the syllables that make up modern words. It is the 'upper form' of a solid material that requires most manipulation to make them practical working surfaces.

Throughout history, we prefer to use working surfaces that not only allow us to achieve what was intended, but to achieve it without restriction and for a multitude of purposes. We've all used a less than ideal temporary surface, which annoyingly allows things to roll away... is this not a restriction? Although, they can be found everywhere in nature, finding a practical solid surface worktop is not so easy unless they are adapted in some way. A practical working surface would be one that is level, of the right depth, and of course withstand repetitive use.
Out in nature, far from man-made creations, surfaces you could use are either upright or angled and made of wood, stone or compacted ground. Wooden and solid stone surfaces are used to live in and store things. So right there, the need for human kind to manipulate nature is within us all, in an effort to achieve more so we can create more. Artisans working with wood or stone became traditional trades 'carpenters' and 'stonemasons' slowly diminished through time as technology advances, all of which may have to be re-learned at some point if not preserved.

Skills learned through creativity and manipulation of natural resources such as wood and stone makes carpenters and stonemasons. Given the drive as a species to create for the benefit of the whole contributes to the development of civillisations. Although this may seem like a giant leap, try to imagine a growing city with purpose made hobby / craft tables and one without them.
The problems we witness around the world today caused by blinded leaders that control the many at the mercy of those who control them. Essential trades that are within each country keep them what they are ...until some budding entrepreneur comes along at the mercy of those leaders and design tables that make tables. The modern trend for AI and intelligent machines, requires abandonment of traditional skills - that which gives humankind its creativity must be preserve at all costs.
Metallurgy & The Rise Of Technological Advancements
Technological advancements in the search for stronger materials begins with metallurgy, the art of extracting metals from ores and combining metals to form alloys.
Extraction of ores has also brought upon us an 'understanding' of stone formation and crystalline structures. Metallurgy gives rise to metals as worktop surfaces, but mostly precision machines. With the advent of machinery, manufacturing exerts itself during the period of the industrial revolution. So those metal tables that make tables so much more efficiently than mankind, can make practical working surfaces for consumers. But it also means, more durable and resistant surfaces for more purposes and reasons to need a worktop surface!
Our Unsustainable Path To Create Durable Minerals
Needing surfaces to work at and to withstand the chores of everyday wear and tear, has driven us as consumers to source the most durable natural stone materials for worktops. Manipulation of materials in an effort to create enduring worktops sees us breaking down natural materials to reform them into man-made working surfaces; in the hope that they will be more resistant.
Although to some extent this works, there is and will always be a factor that has to give that is equal to the benefit gained. We understand now that the toughness and resilience of any material cannot be more than the minerals that the material is composed of. Our current understanding utilises all the classical elements (Earth, Air, Fire and Water) in combination to mimic natural stone formation to produce harder minerals. The energy used and environmental impact of resources to do such is unsustainable and in all honesty, a result of greed and immaturity.
We Must Change Paradigms To Work In Harmony With Natural Order
Forever chasing technology, will human kind we ever be satisfied? Our current path of technological advancements requires colliding particles and forcing change through heat.
Very few understand the physics involved in making the switch to sustainable and harmonious methods, those that do, fear change to their paradigms. But is there another way? Yes, there is and its much simpler and cost effective than most would believe. What stops us from advancing in this new sustainable and environmetally friendly direction is acceptance of undeniable facts and those that wish to suppress them. All that we have learned must be revisited with our own fresh eyes and not through the eyes of another (especially if they are wearing a white coat!)
Natural cycle, ignorance and pollution
What comes from nature has an urge to return to it, however, a materialistic world is forced to take what it has accrued through manipulation along for the ride. Nothing creates better, or more efficiently than the minerals formed though the forces of the classical elements, and the underlying rhythm of frequencies that shapes all things. So, why not duplicate that with technology?! Our attempts to mimic natural processes to form harder, denser and more resistant surfaces has provided man kind with some outstanding and resistant materials. But this has come at a cost of destroying the very thing we want to imitate through ignorance and pollution. Yes, all this because we need worktops to produce, manufacture, dictate and legislate.
We have the knowledge, we just do not implement it correctly
Modern science and technology utilises frequency in everything, without it nothing is possible or if we delve deeper - no thing exists. We have the knowledge, we just do not implement it correctly, it has been tweaked to be counter productive. Sight, sound, radio and electricity are expressed in waves, reflections of light waves.. we cannot see them but we know they are there. Sight expressed in frequency is colour. Sound expressed in frequency is vibration, radio expressed in frequency is electromagnetic and so on. The answer was given to us by Walter Russell back in the 1920's and was consequently suppressed and shunned by academia. If all things are frequency, then why has the periodic table of elements not been associated and expressed as components of frequency?
